Black Friday blog round-up
While everyone else is crashing malls and crashing websites today, I am staying home. I am going nowhere near a public place. Instead, I am working on wedding photos all day for my last wedding of the year and catching up on some blogging reading. I was tempted to go to a mall and photograph humanity at its worst, but I don’t want some middle-aged woman to beat me to death with my own camera. So, I am staying in. Here is some interesting reading from around the inter-webs:
Happy Thanksgiving
I am not much of a food photographer, but I give it a try from time to time. There were only three of us for Thanksgiving this year, so there weren’t many portraits to capture. Plus, when your wife threatens your life with a butchers knife, you learn to just focus on the food. Above are some of the shots from the day. Nothing great, but I am happy.
Starting a New Personal Project
I am starting a new personal project. In fact it is one I have been thinking about for a long time, but never took any steps forward. Given my recent schedule that should be of no surprise. I am starting today, and I need your help!
Here is the concept: produce a short series of portraits featuring the families of active-duty military members.
Art Photography Prints for Everyone
If you have an interest in art and photography, definitely check out 20×200.com. The team at 20×200 has a well established mantra they stick to: (limited editions X low prices) + the internet = art for everyone. Each week, they release two new limited edition works – one photograph and one work on paper.
Ask Your Photographer These Questions!
I have been interviewed by countless couples and families seeking a photographer for their wedding or family portraits. In general, everyone asks good questions. However, some of the most important are often left out. If the questions go unasked, I try to bring up the information anyhow.
Brooke in the Valley
In the heart of the summer, I found a great new shooting location. Brooke and I headed down to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park to do some personal portraits. While I focus on wedding photography, I still do a lot of personal portraiture. These were shot on a valley wall between two highways that cross [...]
Gear – Elinchrom Ranger Quadra lighting
When I first saw the new battery-powered Elinchrom Ranger Quadra pack and head, I thought it was a waste. All that money for a pack and head system that only delivers 400 WS of power. I wanted something bigger.
Now that I have been dragging hundreds of pounds of lighting gear to weddings (my battery alone weights 25 lbs), I am beginning to rethink my choices. Step inside to see a great video and learn why this system could be really good for wedding photographers.
Cuba’s sugar train
I had no clue who Landon Nordeman was. However, I found his stunning work via Rachel Hulin, of “A Photography Blog” (God, I love Rachel). At any rate, check out the video below. Create historical information and even more amazing portraiture. (video credit: Landon Nordeman) See y’all soon, Hunter Connect with Hunter View wedding Portfolio [...]
Gear – Nikon 85mm f/1.4
OK…to start we have to address the nick-name for this lens – “The Cream Machine.” You know that a lens is good when it garners a nick name. And this one gets one heck of a name. It almost sounds like it could be a 70′s porno. The name actually refers to the out-of-focus areas, [...]
November’s featured photographers
As you may know, I use services from PhotoShelter. Aside from the killer tools they provide, they also do a great job of featuring the work of their user community. Below is a slide show of this month’s featured photographers: There really isn’t much wedding or portrait photography in there. And I don’t think any [...]
Kate & Brian – Downtown Cleveland wedding
OMG, OMG, OMG…the wedding I have been waiting for all year finally happened. And it was awesome. Jeremy, my assistant, and I got a insane amount of wedding photos. I will be editing the photos for weeks, but it was totally worth it. With wedding clients like Kate and Brian, you can’t help but to get excited.
Step inside to see how this middle-November wedding featured amazing weather, locations and a gorgeous couple.
Kate & Brian – Rocky River Engagement
There are certain things that make me happy to be a Cleveland wedding photographer. The most notable is the scenery. Cleveland has a huge abundance of shooting locations. The Rocky River Reservation, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, downtown Cleveland, and any number of suburb locations are all great places to shoot.
