Alexis & Joe – Dowtown Columbus Engagement on Film categories: engagement

I stood at the counter with an old Nikon film camera in my hands while the salesman at Columbus Camera Group chatted me up. This was the third camera shop I ‘d visited in just a couple hours to fulfill my shopping list. OK, the F100 was coming with me. It joined a bundle of film in the trunk of my car. I got the itch about a week earlier. The itch that says “let’s try something different”. So for Alexis and Joe’s engagement session in German Village and downtown Columbus, it had to be film. It also had to be an evening shoot. After all, the solstice had just passed.

I was a little early when I rang Alexis. “Sure, come on in”, she said. After some searching I found their door. Alexis was in a gorgeous periwinkle dress, hunting around her kitchen for something.

“You said pastels look nice, right?”

“The dress is beyond perfect”, I responded. And the dress was…just…perfect.

Alexis went on to explain her nervousness as Joe came down the stairs. All of my clients start off nervous, but soon settle into a little rhythm. Alexis and Joe would be no different. In fact, their engagement photos around German Village and downtown Columbus came out perfectly. It’s not the film or the evening light, although that helps. The photos are exceptional because, at the very core, their about a girl and a guy in love. The love shows. So does the friendship and kindness.

Below are just a few favorites from this beautiful evening engagement session -

The German Village Book Loft is a favorite place for Alexis and Joe. Thankfully, the staff let us take a few shots inside.

Just as the sun was nearing the horizon, we sat for a drink in an outdoor bar. At just the perfect moment, we finished our drinks to capture the fading, peach-toned sunlight.

Even though Columbus is my home town, it’s been a while since I spent anytime in downtown. It’s amazing what they have done with the city, and the river front in particular. It’s gorgeous and I could definitely get used to shooting in the city. Thankfully, I will be back in Columbus soon for Alexis and Joe’s wedding. Can’t wait!

For curious photographers, the above is Fuji Pro 400h shot on my Mamiya 645-AFDII. I didn’t use the Nikon F100 because I had to test it before using it professionally.

I must have looked a little crazy getting out of my car. After all, I brought my own apples to an apple orchard – and they were from the grocery store. That’s like bringing your own booze to an open bar party! However, I wanted to ensure Katie and Jerry’s engagement session at the orchard was perfect. It was late in the season and I wasn’t sure there would be apples left, so I would come prepared. I did get a couple funny looks.

We had the entire orchard shoot on lock. Everything went perfectly. The sun agreed to set at the perfect time. The leaves…leafed, and there were apples all around. To ensure a good variety of shots, we made a day of the session. We started in downtown Columbus near the Short North and Arena Districts. The sun was burning hot, so we searched out places in the shade for some nice, open light.

To make the day that much more special, I made sure to bring along the Mamiya medium format film camera. About half the engagement photos you see below were shot on film. I actually shot about 6 rolls in all. Medium format film has quickly become one of my favorite formats for portraits. However, I need some more practice with the camera. Checkout some of my favorite photos below -

The gerber daisy was Katie’s idea! It reminded me of a time before my wife and I were married. I used to grow gerber daisy’s on my porch in pots. When Brooke would come over, I would always cut one for her. They are stupid easy to grow and are gorgeous! To this day, Brooke and I have a special thing for gerbers. And of course Katie looks amazing with pink.

I simply asked “how good are you a blowing bubbles?” After some confused looks, I whipped out the Hubba-Bubba. Next thing you know, we are having a bubble blowing challenge. I think Katie may have won!

As you can see, the light at the end of the day was amazing. I love how the grass in the shade almost looks blue due to the film I was using. The FujiFilm Pro 400h is just amazing. It is perfect for shots with a mix of sun and shade. The film gives great detail because it has nearly 16 stops of performance. OK, enough techie stuff. Keep an eye for more coming soon, and tell leave comments below with your impression of the photos.

It’s 9:00 and I am flying down the highway, leaving Cleveland for Columbus. I have an engagement shoot later that day and everything is perfect. Then WHAM! Life always throws you a twist when things are too perfect. The twist for me was traffic. The kind of highway traffic where you park the car and play football in the median. I was going nowhere and the shoot I had planned for weeks was in jeopardy.

After an hour and a half in traffic, I was finally free and flying again. All of that for a simple two car wreck. I was graciously left with just enough time to get film and make the shoot. Katie, Jerry and I met in the Short North and then headed out. We shot a little in downtown Columbus, then headed to private apple orchard in Sunbury, Ohio. The one preview image below is from the orchard -

I am editing the digital engagement photos now. I will have a longer post online once I get the film and polaroid scans back from the lab. I definitely love the look of medium format film for engagement shoots, but waiting for results is like a little death. Thankfully my lab is good and fast. That’s all for now and check for more soon.
