Meghan & Aaron – A Summer Wedding at the Chautauqua Institution, New York

Weddings at the Chautauqua Institution are amazing for handful of reasons. The outdoor spaces are amazing, trumped only by the architecture. Also, Chautauqua is a thriving community and not just a cookie-cutter vacation resort. The people make the community and most of them have been a part of Chautauqua for years. For example, Meghan’s family has been a part of Chautauqua for four generations! For these reasons a many others, Meghan & Aaron’s wedding at Chautauqua was something truly special.

I could spend days listing all the amazing moments from Meghan & Aaron’s wedding. Their wedding was truly filled with the most amazing people, moments and emotions. Due to a lengthy list of “things to love” about their weddings, I’ll simply focus of a few key things. It all starts with their rehearsal held on the Friday before the wedding. I had come up early to do some extra scouting, and was kindly invited to attend the rehearsal and dinner. This gave me a chance to meet everyone before the big day and to capture some photos simply for the fun of it. It was clear from the start that the group assembled for the wedding was special.

I also love that Meghan & Aaron chose to do a first look before the wedding ceremony. Meghan had located a little Victorian garden nestled among the Chautauqua homes that made the perfect location. We carefully orchestrated the moment and came away with some beautiful candid moments and great portraits of Meghan & Aaron together. In case your curious, you can see a little bit more from their first look. The wedding party was also a little bit of awesome. Each member was family or a life-long friend. From start to finish, I had a blast spending time with this small group of close friends.

Meghan & Aaron’s wedding was made more personal by the design. Aaron, a graphic designer by trade, designed all of the wedding stationary, signs and other decorative elements. From water bottles to the uber-creative wedding invitation, Aaron did it all. The end results was a cohesive and brilliant design. Meghan’s touch could be seen throughout the reception at the Athenaeum Hotel. Beautifully simply hydrangeas and roses were all around. Tables were marked with the cities they’ve been and each guest was seated via a airline ticket escort card.

There was an emotional wedding ceremony at the Hall of Philosophy, heartfelt toasts, poignant first dances, and celebrating all night long. However, my favorite moment by far was something extra special. It was the finishing touch that made everything perfect. Like a dash of bitters in a whiskey drink. At the end of the night, all of the guests descended the hill from the hotel to the lake shore. Sky lanterns were handed out and guests slowly began to set them adrift, floating freely in the night sky over the lake. This candle-lit moment served as the perfect end to a perfect day.

Preview – Meghan & Aaron’s Emotional First Look at Chautauqua

It felt like I was returning to an old home. Returning to someplace I had been many times before, yet this was only my second wedding at the Chautauqua Institution in New York. There’s something about Chautauqua that makes it feel immediately familiar. The character is immediately recognizable, the people friendly and the landscape is amazingly gorgeous. When Meghan and Aaron first contacted me about their wedding, I jumped at the opportunity to return once more to this old, quaint community by the shore.

The wedding day started off as normal – with Meghan and Aaron getting ready with their friends and family. Truth be told, there was a slight under-current of nervousness all around. The big moment was approaching and everyone had to be ready. Meghan and Aaron’s private “first look” before the wedding ceremony was just minutes away. A community garden nestled among the Victorian homes was selected as the perfect spot. Aaron walked to the garden with the groomsmen, while a trolly provided by the Chautauqua Institution picked up Meghan and the bridesmaids.

Holding Meghan back for a moment, I walked into the garden to greet Aaron. “Are you ready,” I asked. “Yes, let’s do this,” Aaron replied. I explained what would happen, stepped back and gave Meghan the signal. “Deep breath” I thought to myself.

Below you can find the results – a intimate moment between Meghan and Aaron filled with joy and excitement. Soon I’ll have more from this amazing Chautauqua wedding, but for today, enjoy this most important moment, with a little surprise at the end.

I love that last photo. It really shows how fun Meghan and Aaron are together. Little moments like this are fleeting and hard to catch, but I love each one. More to come soon.

Caroline & Todd – Evening Engagement at University of Cincinnati

It was a crazy day. Up at 6:00am and right into the car. After nearly five hours in the car, we arrived in Cincinnati. Thankfully, I had Brooke along for the drive. We dropped off our bags, grabbed a quick lunch, and then I was out the door. Before Caroline and Todd’s engagement session in Cincinnati, I need to do my scouting. We had picked some gorgeous locations – the University of Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Natural History Museum, and Ault Park. However, I had only seen these places virtually. It was time to get familiar with them in-person.

I always love working in new and different places. The change of scenery really helps me to be more creative. Everything is different and I hone in on what’s most important. I drove a full lap around Cincinnati while scouting, and returned to where I started to meet with Caroline and Todd. Sitting at Panera, I shot a quick text to Caroline – “I’m here early.”

“OK! We are en route…,” she replied.

The day could not have been better. It was pure sun and a bit mild. Being late April, all of the flowering trees were alight with bright pink blooms. Topping everything off, Caroline and Todd looked smashing for their engagement session. I love pastels on film and their outfits were perfect. While Caroline and Todd met at the University of Cincinnati, they were now living in DC. They had flown in just for the session, and thankfully on time. Due to some east coast weather, they almost missed it.

After Caroline dropped her purse in the rental car, we headed off across campus. No more than 100 yards later, we had a problem. The purse was in the trunk of the car. The keys were in the purse. Todd came to the rescue. He made a few quick calls and the problem was solved. While we waited for the locksmith to arrive, we got started with a few photos.

I think Todd is a problem solver. While Caroline and Todd met at University of Cincinnati, they both moved separately to DC afterward. They both wanted to move things forward, and to formalize things, Todd bought a ring the next time Caroline was out-of-town. One night, Caroline and Todd were sitting in her apartment assembling IKEA furniture. In a private moment together, Todd proposed, Which brings us to today.

What do I love most about Caroline and Todd’s engagement session? Full sun and full love. They’re so expressive together. Deeply in love and it shows. I think you will see what I mean in the highlights below. Enjoy!
